Is It Recommended To Apply Patch Bundles When PSU Is Available? -ID 743554.1

Posted on 20-Oct-2010 By Admin No Comments on Is It Recommended To Apply Patch Bundles When PSU Is Available? -ID 743554.1

Applies to:

Oracle Server – Enterprise Edition – Version: 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.1 – Release: 10.2 to 11.2

Information in this document applies to any platform.

Oracle Server Enterprise Edition – Version: 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.1

Goal

1.Do you still need to apply Patch Bundles for a certain patchset level when Patch Set Update (PSU) for that patchset has been released?

Solution

1. Oracle has introduced Patch Set Updates (PSU) which include recommended fixes for generic , RAC and DataGuard issues. Patch Set Updates are a quarterly single patch typically containing from 50 to 100 new fixes which is intended to supersede most bundle patches (such as RAC, DG, and DB generic bundles) and recommended patch lists.

The PSU should be treated as the recommended patch for these areas and it replaces the Patch bundle concepts.

Please read Note 854428.1 for an introduction to Patch Set Updates.

Hence Patch Bundles are no more mentioned under the recommended patch list and you should go ahead and apply the latest DATABASE PSU available for the relase which INCLUDES the latest CPU patch along with the Generic Patch bundles.

PSUs will be fully cumulative so all content from the previous PSUs will be included in the latest, but most one-off patches built for previous code lines are NOT included.
