Changing Instance Name ( No DB_NAME)

Posted on 11-Jun-2007 By Admin No Comments on Changing Instance Name ( No DB_NAME)

Note

Instance name : represented by $ORACLE_SID

database name : represented by DB_NAME init.ora parameter.

You can change instance name to any name with following requirements:

Here we are chaning instance name from AWRTEST1 to PARESH.

Exising setup:

ORACLE_SID=AWRTEST1

Step1:

$ export ORACLE_SID=PARESH;

Step2:

Create password file for new instance PARESH.

$ cd $ORACLE_HOME/dbs

$ orapwd file=orapwPARESH entries=10 password=oracle

Step3:

Start New instance. You must specify parameter file as PFILE or need to create pfile link

in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs for this new instance.

$ sqlplus “/ as sysdba”

SQL> startup pfile=’/db1/home/oracle/app/oracle/admin/AWRTEST1/pfile/initAWRTEST1.ora’

Then insance will be started with new name. All backgraound processes have instance name specific postfix.

12:53:21 @PARESH:-> !ps -ef | grep PARESH

oracle 9550 1 1 12:53:11 ? 0:02 ora_mmon_PARESH

oracle 9481 1 0 12:49:58 ? 0:00 ora_s000_PARESH

oracle 9477 1 0 12:49:58 ? 0:01 ora_cjq0_PARESH

oracle 9465 1 0 12:49:57 ? 0:00 ora_dbw0_PARESH

oracle 9467 1 0 12:49:57 ? 0:00 ora_dbw1_PARESH

and so onnnnnnn………….
