Running Cluster Verification Utility to Diagnose Install Problems

Information in this document applies to any platform.

Purpose

The purpose of this document is to enable the DBA to diagnose install failures using Cluster Verification Utility (cluvfy).

Scope and Application

This note is intended for DBAs installing Oracle Clusterware (CRS) and Oracle Real Application Cluster, which need to see if their environment is setup correctly.

Running Cluster Verification Utility to Diagnose Install Problems

CRS Software Install Failures

There are 2 options for running Cluster verification.

1. It is highly recommended to get the latest CVU (cluvfy) software from OTN.

The software can be used for Oracle 10.1, 10.2 and 11.1 installations.

Follow the readme that comes with cluvfy.

./cluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n , -verbose | tee /tmp/cluvfy_preinst.log

Replace , with your actual nodenames, for example dbnode1,dbnode2

2. Make use of cluvfy if the CRS software stack is installed.

If the CRS software is installed you can find cluvfy under $ORA_CRS_HOME/bin

cd $ORA_CRS_HOME/bin

./runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n , -verbose | tee /tmp/cluvfy_preinst.log

./cluvfy stage -post crsinst -n all -verbose | tee /tmp/cluvfy_postinst.log

Replace , with your actual nodenames, for example dbnode1,dbnode2

CVU log files can be found under $CV_HOME/cv/log directory. The CV_HOME can be $ORA_CRS_HOME/cv/log location as well as the /TMP location.

The output of CLUVFY is usefull to see what is wrong for the installation, the file created in /tmp should be uploaded to the for further analysis.

RDBMS Software Install Failures

Normally when the CRS software will install correct, the chance is small you are facing an install issue with the RDBMS software but if this is the case you can follow the above part but instead of using -pre crsinst make use of -pre dbinst, the other part of the above command can be the same, for example:

./runcluvfy.sh stage -pre dbinst -n , -verbose | tee /tmp/cluvfy_dbinst.log

./cluvfy stage -pre dbinst -n , -verbose | tee /tmp/cluvfy_dbinst.log

Collecting Information For Cluvfy Failures

In some cases cluvfy can fail. If that is the case and you can not diagnose the issue it is recommended to set the environment variable SRVM_TRACE to true and repeat the command. The output will be written to a file in $CV_HOME/cv/log directory. You may open a service request and upload the corresponding logfile to the service request.

For example:

SRVM_TRACE=true

export SRVM_TRACE

cluvfy comp ssa -n dbnode1,dbnode2 -s
